Decisions About Who Lives And Dies Made By Stretched NHS Workers To Become The Norm?

The decisions being forced upon doctors in Spain treating Covid-19 patients as their health service continues to face intense pressure, and is on the verge of crumbling; will soon be needed to be taken in the UK on a daily basis it is feared.

With the release this evening shortly before this article gets published of a video of a Spanish doctor in tears, explaining the life and death decisions forced upon him and his colleagues, raises the awful spectre of such decisions being forced upon NHS staff very soon within the UK!

But perhaps such decisions are already being taken by politicians, doctors and even patients themselves.

A former Government chief scientist has said on Radio 4 yesterday that Covid-19 patients over the age of 90 should consider not going into hospital to avoid being a 'burden' on the health service!

Professor Sir David King said,

“I certainly would advise anyone in the region of 90, 95 years old who is susceptible for whatever reason, not to go into hospital for two reasons. One is, you go into hospital at that age with problems and you may never come out, but of course the second reason is you are overburdening the NHS.”

Caroline Abrahams, from Age UK, said some would have already come to the same decision, but 'in the end, it's not a question for individuals and families, it's a question for doctors.

This comes after the news that Kayla Williams, 36, from Peckham, south London died of suspected Covid-19 after being told she was 'not a priority'. The mother of three, died on Saturday 21st March, a day after paramedics were called to her home in Peckham.

The Metro free newspaper reported that her husband, Fabian Williams I called 999 because my wife was breathless, she was vomiting and she had pains in her stomach. As I was talking to them she was getting worse and they told me to put her on the floor and to make her body flat.”

When the paramedic arrived at 8.32am she carried out some tests, Williams said. “She told me the hospital won’t take her, she is not a priority. She did not stay very long and she went outside to write her report and posted it through the door.”

Williams said his wife’s condition deteriorated the next day. He ran her a bath in the morning and helped her to get dressed, before feeding her some soup. After taking a short rest himself, he went into the front room where she had been resting to find his wife slumped head down. “She was already dead,” he said.

“I put her on the ground – because that is what they had told me to do before – and I rang 999 again and they told me to put my hand on her chest and pump her chest.”

Three cars and an ambulance arrived at his home a short time later, he said. The crews tried to revive his wife, but were not successful.

There are also news items appearing daily of much younger people succumbing to the disease, including a 51yr old who did not wish to burden the NHS by calling 111, despite running a fever. He died the following day alone at home.
